Axolotls spawn in underground water pools, most often in lush caves, at level Y = 63 or below. They can appear in several color variants; however, the true gem is the rare blue axolotl – the chance of it spawning is only 1 in 1200.
The diet of these creatures is limited to a single type of food: the Bucket of Tropical Fish. They will not accept fish caught with a fishing rod or just raw fish meat. Feeding them is crucial if you want to breed axolotls and build your own colony, so every player planning to keep them in their base should learn how to catch tropical fish.
How to Get Food for Your Axolotl in Minecraft
The main part of an axolotl’s diet is, of course, tropical fish in the form of a Bucket of Tropical Fish. Getting it requires a few steps, but luckily it’s not complicated:
- Prepare a bucket – on the crafting table, place 3 iron ingots in a “V” shape. Once you have the bucket, fill it with water by right-clicking any water block. This gives you a Bucket of Water, which is necessary for catching fish.
- Find a place where tropical fish spawn – most commonly this will be a warm ocean, but they can also appear in lush caves and mangrove swamps.
- Catch the fish – when you see a tropical fish, approach or swim up to it while holding the bucket in your hand and right-click on it. The Bucket of Water in your inventory will turn into a Bucket of Tropical Fish – a ready meal for your axolotl.
Why do you feed Axolotls in Minecraft
At first glance, feeding axolotls in Minecraft might seem like nothing more than a cute little interaction – you hand them a bucket of tropical fish and enjoy a moment with an adorable mob. In practice, however, feeding plays several key roles that make it absolutely essential if you want to take full advantage of your aquatic companion.
First of all, it is the only way to breed axolotls. When you feed two adults, they will enter Love Mode, and shortly after, a baby axolotl will appear. This is the only method of increasing their population and improving your chances of obtaining the rare blue variant.
The second important aspect is maintaining attention and control over the animal. While axolotls cannot be tamed in the same way as cats or wolves, holding a Bucket of Tropical Fish in your hand will easily attract their attention, allow you to lead them to a chosen spot, or gather several individuals in one water tank.
