One of the more fascinating mobs inhabiting the world of Minecraft is the armadillo – a calm, passive creature that does not attack players and avoids conflicts, yet manages to bring many interesting elements into the gameplay. It naturally appears in warm and dry biomes – you can find it wandering through the savanna, among acacia trees, as well as in the badlands, a harsh and colorful wasteland. In the savanna, they usually move in small groups, while in the badlands you are more likely to encounter them alone or in pairs.
Their most distinctive feature is their defensive instinct – when they sense danger, they curl up into a ball and remain still until the threat has passed. The only mob they don’t fear are spiders, which, instead of attacking, actually run away in the opposite direction. These spiders also happen to be the source of the armadillo’s unusual dietary preference. Armadillos eat only Spider Eyes, an item you can obtain by defeating regular spiders or their cave-dwelling variants.
How to get food for an Armadillo
To feed an Armadillo, you need only one item: the Spider Eye. This item is not as common as carrots or meat, which is why it’s important to know the best ways to obtain it. The simplest method is hunting spiders at night. They usually spawn naturally in dark places, so nighttime is the best moment to encounter them. During the day, spiders remain neutral unless provoked, but once night falls, they become aggressive and will attack players on sight. When defeated, they have a chance to drop a Spider Eye as well as string. However, this drop is not guaranteed, so it’s worth hunting several spiders to secure enough supplies.

Another method is to venture into abandoned mineshafts, where you’ll find Cave Spiders, most often clustered around special spawners. These are more dangerous than their regular counterparts, so caution is needed. Their bite inflicts poison, which can be extremely risky in the tight, dark tunnels of a mineshaft.
Why do you feed Armadillos in Minecraft
Feeding an Armadillo is not just a fun interaction – it is a mechanic that has practical uses and gives the player real benefits. The first and most important reason is, of course, breeding. When you feed two adult armadillos, they will enter love mode, and shortly after, a baby will appear. This allows you to increase the number of these mobs in your base without having to travel on long journeys to distant warm biomes. It is especially valuable if you want to regularly take advantage of the resources that this mob provides.

The second effect is simply accelerating the growth of babies. Giving a baby armadillo a single Spider Eye shortens the growth process by 10% each time. This means that if you gather a sufficient number of Spider Eyes, you can very quickly raise more adult armadillos and harvest more Armadillo Scutes.
