Skeletons in Minecraft come in several different variants and each of them has unique behavior, spawn locations, and a combat style. Although all of them belong to the undead mob group, some use special arrows or fight with swords, while others spawn only in specific biomes. In this guide, we will take a look at all skeletons in Minecraft and explain how they differ from the classic variant.
All Types of Skeletons in Minecraft
Below you will find five variants of skeletons that appear in Minecraft.
Skeleton
A skeleton is a basic and one of the most common mobs in Minecraft. It belongs to the undead category and attacks players from a distance using a bow and arrows, which makes it a fairly dangerous enemy at the beginning of the game.
You will most often encounter it at night or in low light areas such as caves or dark forests. Unlike zombies, it does not approach the player directly but keeps a safe distance while attacking.

After defeating a skeleton, it can drop bones, arrows, and sometimes a bow.
Stray
A stray is a cold variant of the skeleton that behaves similarly to it but spawns in cold biomes such as snowy plains, ice spikes, and frozen rivers, most often at night or in dark areas. It can also form from a normal skeleton if it stays in powder snow for some time.

Like regular skeletons, strays attack from a distance using a bow, but their arrows apply the Slowness effect for 30 seconds, making them more dangerous because they make it harder to escape. After defeating a stray, it can drop bones, arrows, and arrows of Slowness, which are its unique drop.
Wither Skeleton
A wither skeleton is a dark variant of the skeleton in Minecraft that spawns only in Nether fortresses in the Nether. It is taller and black, which makes it easy to distinguish from a regular skeleton, and unlike normal skeletons it does not use a bow but fights with a stone sword.

Each hit applies the Wither effect to the player, which works similarly to poison but can kill the player, making it one of the more dangerous mobs. A wither skeleton is immune to fire and does not burn in lava or sunlight.
After defeating it, it can drop bones, coal, and a stone sword, and in rare cases a wither skeleton skull, which is required to summon the Wither.
Bogged
A bogged is a swamp variant of the skeleton that naturally spawns in biomes such as swamp and mangrove swamp. It can also be found in trial chambers where it appears from ranged trial spawners.

Like a normal skeleton, a bogged attacks the player from a distance using a bow, but instead of regular arrows it uses arrows of Poison, which apply the Poison effect for a few seconds on hit, making fights more annoying and dangerous.
After defeating a bogged, it can drop bones and arrows as usual, as well as arrows of Poison and a damaged bow.
Parched
A parched is a desert variant of the skeleton that spawns in the desert biome and replaces normal skeletons there. It behaves very similarly to a regular skeleton but does not burn in sunlight, which makes it more dangerous during the day. It also uses arrows of Weakness that apply the Weakness effect to players.

After defeating it, it can drop bones, arrows, arrows of Weakness, and a damaged bow.
