Books aren’t just decoration on a shelf – in the world of Minecraft, they open the door to more advanced gameplay. They may seem small and simple, but their potential is massive, ranging from basic crafting to powerful enchanting and custom-written logs.
One of the main uses of books is enchanting – applying special effects to your weapons, tools, or armor. Instead of risking random, weak enchantments, you can enchant a book first and then combine it with your gear using an anvil. This gives you much more control over your upgrades.
Another great use is the ability to write in books. It’s a perfect tool if you keep an exploration journal, jot down coordinates, create quests, or even write your own in-game stories.
And if you want stronger enchantments, you can surround your Enchanting Table with bookshelves. Each bookshelf boosts the power of the table, allowing you to unlock higher-level enchantments.
Minecraft Book Recipe
To create a single book in Minecraft, you’ll need two types of materials:
- 3 x Paper
- 1 x Leather

How to Get Paper in Minecraft
Paper is a basic ingredient used to craft both books and maps. You can’t find it lying around — it has to be crafted manually using Sugar Cane at a Crafting Table.

Where to Find Sugar Cane
Sugar Cane generates naturally near water sources, such as lakes, rivers, oceans, and swamps.
It only grows on sand or grass blocks, and only if there is a water block directly next to it (even diagonally). Once you find some, you can start your own farm and harvest it as needed.
How to Get Leather in Minecraft
Leather is another essential ingredient, and it can be a bit tricky to get, especially in the early stages of the game. You can’t craft leather from other materials – it must be obtained from mobs or through recycling certain items. Most efficient sources of leather:
- Cows – the best and easiest method; they’re common and breedable
- Mooshrooms – mushroom-covered cows that behave just like regular ones
- Horses, Donkeys, and Llamas – drop leather but can’t be bred, so less efficient
- Leather Armor – can be smelted in a furnace for 1 leather, but this method is inefficient and slow
To keep a steady supply, setting up a cow farm is the most reliable and sustainable method.
The biome where you’re most likely to encounter cows is Plains – a flat, grassy area that’s perfect for farming leather. You’ll also frequently find them in Sunflower Plains, Meadow, Savanna, and Forest biomes.

How to get books from Villagers
If you don’t feel like farming leather and sugar cane, or you’re looking for ready-to-use enchanted books, the best source is Librarian villagers. You can trade books with them for emeralds, and with a bit of luck, you might get powerful enchantments like Mending or Fortune.
How to assign a villager as a Librarian
Find an adult villager without a profession, and place a Lectern next to them. Once they approach it, it will become their job site, and the villager will turn into a Librarian.
Don’t have a Lectern yet? You can easily craft one with:
- 1x Bookshelf
- 4x Wooden Slabs
Before a Librarian locks in their trade, you can manipulate their offer. To do this, simply break the Lectern and place it down again – the Villager will refresh their trade offer each time. Repeat this process until you see a book with the enchantment you’re looking for. Important: Don’t trade with the Librarian until you get the desired enchantment. Once you make a trade, their offer becomes permanently locked.
