How to find Nether Fortress in Minecraft

The Nether Fortress is one of the key structures in the world of Minecraft, especially for players aiming to complete the game or develop their potion system. While it may not offer spectacular architecture, it contains elements essential for game progression, such as blaze rods and nether wart, as well as unique hostile mobs like Wither Skeletons.

Without finding a fortress, the player won’t be able to brew potions like Fire Resistance or craft the Eye of Ender, which is required to activate the portal to the End. For that reason, the Nether Fortress becomes a mandatory exploration target at a certain stage of gameplay.

The problem is that fortresses aren’t visible from the portal area, and the Nether itself – while finite – is difficult to navigate. Many players wander aimlessly, unaware of how fortress generation actually works. In this article, we’ll explain where and how to find this elusive structure efficiently and safely.

How to create a Nether Portal

Before you can start looking for a fortress, you first need to travel to the Nether — an alternate dimension filled with danger, rare resources, and unique structures. To enter it, you’ll need to build a Nether Portal and activate it using flint and steel.

To construct the portal, you need 14 blocks of obsidian. The portal frame must be 5 blocks tall and 4 blocks wide. Once you’ve built the frame, right-click the inside or one of the frame blocks with flint and steel. A purple mist will appear — this means the portal is active and ready to use.

How to find a Nether Fortress

The Nether is divided into regions measuring 432×432 blocks, and in each of these regions, only one structure can generate – either a Nether Fortress or a Bastion Remnant. If one of them is generated, the other will not appear in that same region.

Although each region measures 432×432 blocks, only the inner 368×368 block area is considered the active generation zone. Along the southeastern edge of every region, there is a 64-block-wide strip where no structure can generate at all. This means you need to travel approximately 400–500 blocks to reach the next possible generation region.

Here are some tips that will help you find a Nether Fortress more efficiently:

  1. Move along a single axis (X or Z) – by traveling in a straight line, you systematically cross generation regions and increase your chances of locating a fortress.
  2. Stick to the Nether Wastes biome – it’s the most open biome in the Nether, offering the best visibility and traversal conditions.
  3. Watch for Nether Bricks and listen for Blaze sounds – fortress bridges and towers often stick out above lava lakes or cliffs. Blaze mobs produce a distinctive fiery sound, and you might hear a spawner before seeing the structure itself.

If you’re not in the mood for tedious searching, you can take advantage of some helpful tools the game offers.
The first method is enabling Spectator Mode, which allows you to freely fly through blocks and quickly explore unexplored areas of the Nether. While flying around, you’ll likely come across exactly what you’re looking for.

Simply use the following command:

/gamemode spectator

If you don’t even feel like flying around, you can switch to Creative Mode, locate the fortress using a command, and simply teleport straight to it.

Use the following commands to find and reach a Nether Fortress instantly:

/locate structure minecraft:fortress
/tp @p x y z
