In Minecraft, the underwater world is full of life, color, and unique blocks that offer much more functionality than one might expect. One of these blocks is the Sea Pickle – small green structures that glow when submerged. While they don’t attack, make sounds, or move like fish, thay can completely transform the look and feel of your underwater base.
You can use them to light up aquariums, create underwater paths and gardens, or decorate coral reefs and pools. This is without a doubt their most obvious use. Thanks to their appearance (small and green), they’re also perfect for crafting natural-looking lanterns, decorative gardens, or tropical design accents.
Additionally, each one can be smelted in a furnace to produce lime dye.
Where to find a Sea Pickle in Minecraft
Sea Pickles only appear in a specific biome: the Warm Ocean. You won’t find them in regular oceans, cold oceans, or deep oceans — you need to locate this tropical variant. It’s a biome known for its light blue water, warm climate, and high visibility. One of the most distinctive features of this area is the presence of coral reefs, which are exactly where these sought-after items grow.
They can also generate on sand or other blocks at the bottom of the ocean. In a single spot, you may find between 1 and 4 Sea Pickles on a block.

How to create a Sea Pickle farm in Minecraft
If you want a steady source of these underwater lanterns, the best solution is to build your own Sea Pickle farm. To do this, you’ll need coral blocks, which can be collected from coral reefs using a tool enchanted with Silk Touch. Without it, the coral will die and turn into gray, useless blocks.
Next, you’ll need to prepare a shallow water tank of any size and place live coral blocks along the bottom.

Once you’ve built the tank, you can plant any number of Sea Pickles on the coral blocks. Using Bone Meal on them will cause them to reproduce randomly within a few blocks. It doesn’t always work perfectly, but by repeating the process, you’ll quickly gather a large amount of this resource.

How to light a Sea Pickle in Minecraft
One of the main advantages of these underwater lanterns is that they can emit light – but only under one condition: they must be fully submerged in water. If you place them on the surface or in a spot where the water doesn’t completely cover the block, they won’t emit any light.
You can place 1 to 4 Sea Pickles on a single block, and the number directly affects the light level they produce:
- 1 = light level 6
- 2 = light level 9
- 3 = light level 12
- 4 = light level 15
This means a full block with four pickles emits the same amount of light as a torch or glowstone. They are perfect for subtle underwater lighting – they don’t take up much space, they won’t ruin your build’s aesthetic, and they can easily be “embedded” into coral decorations.
