Enderman in Minecraft: The Ultimate Guide

How to find Enderman

The Enderman is one of the most iconic mobs in the world of Minecraft – tall, lanky, and completely black, with glowing purple eyes and a faint aura of portal-like particles. It is a neutral mob that appears to ignore the player—until the moment direct eye contact is made. Then, the Enderman transforms from calm and passive to a dangerous and highly mobile enemy that teleports rapidly across the terrain.

Endermen spawn in all three dimensions of the game:

  1. Overworld – They are relatively rare here, spawning only in areas where the light level is 0.
  2. Nether – They can spawn anywhere, but are most commonly found in the Warped Forest biome. They appear less frequently in Soul Sand Valley and Nether Wastes.
  3. The End – This is the natural habitat of Endermen, where they spawn very frequently, often in large groups.

Endermen can only spawn on solid blocks, with at least three blocks of air space above them. Light level also plays a key role: it must be 0 in the Overworld and The End, and 7 or lower in the Nether. They are the only mob in Minecraft that can spawn naturally in all three dimensions of the game.

What blocks can Enderman move

In Minecraft, the Enderman is the only mob that can carry blocks. This behavior is relatively rare, but it can pick up blocks such as:

  • Cactus
  • Cactus Flower
  • Clay
  • Coarse Dirt
  • Rooted Dirt
  • Dirt
  • Flowers
  • Fungi
  • Crimson Roots
  • Warped Roots
  • Grass Block
  • Gravel
  • Melon
  • Moss Block
  • Mud
  • Muddy Mangrove Roots
  • Mushrooms
  • Mycelium
  • Nylium
  • Pale Moss Block
  • Podzol
  • Pumpkins
  • Red Sand
  • Sand
  • TNT

How to kill Enderman

Killing this dark mob can be a challenge, especially because of its teleportation ability and aggressive behavior when direct eye contact is made. However, there are a few tips you can use to make the fight easier:

  1. Build a 2-block-high shelter – Since the Enderman is 3 blocks tall, it can’t fit under a low ceiling. This gives you a safe space to deal damage without getting hit.
  2. Use water as protection – Contact with water causes the Enderman to teleport away. When it attacks you, stand in a stream or place a water bucket nearby to keep it at bay.
  3. Don’t attack from a distance – When hit by a projectile, the Enderman will instantly teleport, making ranged attacks ineffective. A fast melee attack is a better option.
  4. Wear a carved pumpkin on your head – Even if you look directly at an Enderman, it won’t become aggressive when you’re wearing a carved pumpkin as a helmet.

Loot

Defeating this challenging opponent is definitely worth it. Upon death, the Enderman can drop a valuable item called the Ender Pearl – a key ingredient used to craft an Eye of Ender, which is necessary to activate the End Portal. Additionally, it may drop the block it was holding prior to being killed.

How Endermen behave in Minecraft

Enderman behaves very differently from other mobs in Minecraft. It is neutral – it won’t attack you unless you make direct eye contact. However, once that happens, it begins teleporting toward the player to close the distance as quickly as possible. Teleportation is one of its most valuable abilities. An Enderman can teleport up to 32 blocks away, both horizontally and vertically. It does this not only during combat, but also when it comes into contact with water or catches on fire. Interestingly, it actively avoids water – even rain will cause it to panic and teleport elsewhere. When it comes to other mobs, the Enderman behaves unusually: it does not interact with or attack them. The only exception is the Endermite, a small creature that can appear when a player throws an Ender Pearl. Endermen will attack Endermites on sight, regardless of the situation.
