Tropical Fish are among the most colorful and diverse aquatic creatures in Minecraft. While at first glance they may seem like just a decorative addition, their presence offers a surprising number of possibilities – ranging from creating aesthetic aquariums to being a key component in axolotl breeding.
Interestingly, tropical fish aren’t limited to just a few basic models. Thanks to the combination of various patterns and colors, players can encounter nearly 3,000 different variants in-game. This massive variety makes tropical fish a unique collectible and a visual highlight in any underwater build.
They naturally spawn in specific aquatic biomes:
- Mangrove Swamp
- Lukewarm Ocean
- Deep Lukewarm Ocean
- Warm Ocean
- Lush Caves
This means that finding a specific variant can be a real challenge, encouraging exploration and patience. Whether you’re a builder, a collector, or just a curious adventurer, tropical fish offer both beauty and utility in the world of Minecraft.
How to find Tropical Fish in Minecraft
If you want to catch these adorable creatures, you’ll need to prepare for a little expedition. They are most commonly found in warm ocean biomes, with the highest concentration appearing near coral reefs. It’s a good idea to bring a water bucket, as that’s the only way to catch a fish and preserve its unique appearance. When exploring the oceans, it’s best to head out in a boat and observe your surroundings – they often swim just below the surface of the water. You’ll find them in small schools of several fish, so one location can provide you with a solid collection of tropical specimens.

What to do with Tropical Fish in Minecraft
They may seem useless at first glance, but there are actually several ways to make use of them.
Breeding Axolotls
The most important use of tropical fish is, of course, breeding axolotls. It’s the only food that allows them to create a smaller version of their species. You need to use a Bucket of Tropical Fish to feed two adult axolotls – and that’s it, a cute little baby axolotl will appear! Additionally, feeding an injured axolotl with such a bucket will instantly heal it.
Creating an Aquarium
If you’ve already caught a few colorful fish in buckets, you can create a stylish aquarium for them. It’s best to use glass for the walls and fill the interior with coral blocks, kelp, seagrass, and sea lanterns. This kind of setup works perfectly as a decoration built into the wall of your base, as a separate room, or even as a water-filled ceiling.
Cooking
In critical situations, these small sea creatures can be used as a source of nourishment. Once cooked, they provide a modest boost of energy – enough to survive, but far less effective than other available food options. The raw version restores even less, so it’s worth taking the time to cook them properly.
