What do Pigs eat in Minecraft

In the world of Minecraft, there are many adorable creatures — and pigs definitely belong to that category. These pink animals are among the oldest passive mobs in the game, known for their iconic oinking and the ability to be ridden using a saddle and a carrot on a stick.

Pigs are not only cute but also highly useful. They provide raw porkchops, can be bred, semi-tamed, and even used for transportation. But before you start turning them into little tail-powered motorcycles, it’s worth learning the basics of their diet.

Pigs spawn in many biomes, but most commonly in lush, green, player-friendly areas. You’ll typically find them in:

  • Plains – classic grassy areas
  • Forest – especially the brighter parts with more light
  • Sunflower Plains
  • Meadow

They usually spawn in groups of 2–4 and require sufficient light and a block of grass or dirt to appear.

What do Pigs eat

Pigs in Minecraft aren’t too picky and are happy to munch on the crops from your garden. Here’s what you can feed them:

1. Carrot

Carrots are the primary food for pigs. You can hold one in your hand, and the pig will start following you. They’re also used for breeding pigs. You can find carrots in villages (they grow in farms), as rare drops from zombies, or you can grow them yourself in a garden.

2. Potato

Potatoes work the same way as carrots when it comes to feeding and breeding pigs. You can find them in villages, as drops from zombies, or grow them yourself.

3. Beetroot

The third and final item in a pig’s diet is beetroot. It’s less common than carrots and potatoes, but it works the same way. It grows in certain villages, especially in taiga biomes, and you can find its seeds in loot chests and grow it on your own farm.

What you need to know about Pigs in Minecraft

You can breed them and create a sustainable source of food. All you need to do is find two pigs and feed each of them the same crop: carrot, potato, or beetroot. Hearts will appear above their heads, and after a short moment, a baby piglet will spawn.

You can ride them – pigs can serve as a means of transportation. They’re not very fast, but definitely charming. All you need is a saddle and a carrot on a stick. Once you have both, place the saddle on the pig, ride it, and hold the carrot on a stick to control the direction.

If struck by lightning, a pig will transform into a Zombified Piglin – a hostile mob usually found in the Nether. This can also be triggered manually by using the Channeling enchantment on a trident during a thunderstorm.
