How to make a Bookshelf in Minecraft

In the world of Minecraft, many blocks may seem purely decorative – at least at first glance. One such block is the bookshelf. When you first see it, you might think it’s just a nice decoration for your house – but in reality, it’s one of the most important gameplay elements.

Bookshelves are essential for unlocking powerful enchantments on your tools, armor, and weapons. Without them, the enchanting table only offers basic, low-level effects – which quickly become insufficient, especially in the later stages of the game.

How to craft a Bookshelf in Minecraft

To craft a bookshelf in Minecraft, you need two main ingredients:
– 3 books
– 6 wooden planks

While the recipe itself is simple, gathering the materials can take some time. Wood is the easiest resource to obtain – all you need to do is chop down any tree (like oak, birch, acacia, or mangrove) and then convert the logs into planks using a crafting table. One log gives you 4 planks, so you’ll only need two logs to make one bookshelf. Wooden planks can also occasionally be found in loot chests in villages, abandoned mineshafts, or shipwrecks.

Books, on the other hand, are more demanding. To craft a single book, you need:
– 1 leather
– 3 pieces of paper

Leather can be obtained from cows, horses, donkeys, or llamas. Paper is made from sugar cane, which naturally grows near water sources. It’s a good idea to start a sugar cane farm early in the game. Alternatively, you can find already crafted books in loot chests – such as those in villages, strongholds, bastions, or other generated structures. You can also get books by trading with a librarian villager, which can be faster than farming materials.

Another option is to dismantle existing bookshelves, for example those found in stronghold libraries. However, to recover the entire bookshelf block, you must use a tool enchanted with Silk Touch. Otherwise, breaking the bookshelf will only drop 3 books – and the wooden planks will be lost.

Why you need Bookshelves for better enchantments

The primary function of bookshelves in Minecraft is to enhance the enchanting table. On its own, the enchanting table works in a very limited way – it only allows you to apply basic, low-level enchantments, usually between level 1 and 8. If you want to get the best possible enchantments, you need to surround the table with bookshelves in a specific layout.

Each bookshelf increases the strength of the enchanting table, and the full effect is achieved with 15 bookshelves. This setup unlocks enchantments up to level 30 – and that’s the level where you can get the most powerful effects, such as Looting III, Fortune III, or the legendary Mending.

To make the setup work properly, the bookshelves must be placed one block away from the enchanting table, which means:

  • Not directly next to the table, but with one block of space in between
  • The space between the bookshelf and the table must be air – no blocks, torches, carpets, or anything else
  • The best layout is a U-shape around the table – with an opening on one side so you can walk in
