In the world of Minecraft, everything seems simple – until you realize you have no idea which way to go to get back home. An open world, no clear signposts, biomes stretching for thousands of blocks – it takes only a moment of distraction to get completely lost. In such situations, the compass becomes the most classic and atmospheric navigation tool, available even in the early stages of survival. It’s one of those items that can save your supplies – or even your life. But before you rush to the crafting table to create your first one, it’s worth understanding exactly how it works, when it’s useful, and when it might let you down.
How to craft a Compass in Minecraft
A compass in Minecraft is a useful tool that helps you find your way back to the world spawn point. It’s easy to make – you only need 4 iron ingots and 1 redstone dust. Both are easy to get, even early in the game.
1. Get some iron ingots
Start by mining iron ore. You can find it almost anywhere underground. Use at least a stone pickaxe to mine it, then smelt it in a furnace using coal, wood, or any fuel. One iron ore gives you 1 iron ingot. You’ll need four ingots total.

2. Get redstone
Redstone is found deeper underground, usually below Y-level 16. You’ll need an iron pickaxe or better to mine it. Breaking redstone ore gives you multiple redstone dust, so one small vein is usually enough. Just be careful – redstone often spawns near lava.
3. Craft the compass
Once you have 4 iron ingots and 1 redstone dust, open your crafting table. Put the redstone in the center, and place the iron above, below, to the left, and to the right – like a plus shape. That’s it! You’ve crafted your first compass.

How to make a Lodestone in Minecraft
A lodestone is a special block that lets you bind a compass to a custom location. When you right-click it with a compass, that compass will always point back to the lodestone – even from the Nether or the End.
1. Cut stone into slabs with a stonecutter
To craft a lodestone, you first need to cut stone into slabs using a stonecutter, then use those slabs to make chiseled stone bricks.

2. Craft a lodestone with iron ingot
Finally, combine 8 chiseled bricks with 1 iron ingot in a crafting table to get the block.

During biome exploration, fighting mobs, or digging tunnels, it’s easy to get lost. Just a few moments of distraction and suddenly you have no idea where you are. That’s when the compass and lodestone can save you. A lodestone lets you create your own custom navigation point, which is way more precise than a regular compass that only points to world spawn. You can place it near your nether portal, your hidden base, or even in a stronghold – it’s a great way to avoid getting lost and keep your location secret.
