How to make Obsidian in Minecraft

In Minecraft, there is a unique block that stands out for its exceptional hardness and resistance to explosions. It is essential for building a portal to the Nether and is also useful in advanced constructions and base defenses. It can be obtained by combining two opposing elements, and the process is simple and effective; however, it requires some caution, as one mistake can result in the loss of your entire inventory.

How to get Obsidian in Minecraft

Obsidian in Minecraft is created when water comes into contact with a source block of lava. This interaction produces one of the toughest blocks in the game, which cannot be destroyed by explosions, and requires a diamond or netherite pickaxe to mine. Making it is simple, but it requires caution, as working with lava can quickly bring your adventure to an end.

1. Craft some Buckets

To make a bucket in Minecraft, you first need to obtain iron ore, which you can most often find underground, in caves, or on the sides of mountains. It has a light gray color with brown specks and can be mined with a stone pickaxe or better. Collect at least three pieces and smelt them in a furnace to get iron ingots. Once you have three ingots, arrange them in a “V” shape in the crafting table. This will give you a bucket, which you can fill with water or lava.

2. Get a Water Bucket

Water in Minecraft can be found almost everywhere – in lakes, rivers, oceans, and sometimes in small ponds inside caves. Simply approach it while holding a bucket in your hand and right-click – you will then get a Water Bucket.

3. Get a Lava Bucket

Lava in Minecraft is most commonly found deep underground in caves, but it can also be found on the surface. To collect lava in a bucket, right-click on a still lava block while holding a bucket in your hand. If you want to collect it from flowing lava, you need to reach the very top and scoop it directly from the source.

4. Pour Water over the Lava

One way to make obsidian is to create a pool of still lava – simply dig a hole and pour lava from a bucket into it, filling it with full lava source blocks.

Then, pour water from a bucket over it, and you’re done – obsidian blocks will appear.

If you manage to find a natural lava lake, you can skip the first step.

5. Mine the Obsidian with a Diamond or Netherite Pickaxe

Mining obsidian in Minecraft requires a diamond or netherite pickaxe – any other type, even iron, will destroy the block without dropping it. The process is quite slow, so it’s worth having a pickaxe with the Efficiency enchantment to speed it up. Before you start mining, make sure there is no lava block underneath the obsidian – otherwise, you might fall straight into it along with your freshly mined obsidian.

More ways to get Obsidian

The most obvious source is, of course, Ruined Portals, which can be found in many biomes – they often stand partially destroyed or buried, but contain both regular and crying obsidian.

Another location is Ocean Ruins, where under certain conditions a single block of obsidian can generate, which is hard to miss if you spot it. The third option is Woodland Mansions – in these rare structures, you can find a secret “obsidian room” or “lava room,” where there is a chance of the block appearing.
