This is why the car hotwiring mechanic plays such a crucial role, especially in the later stages of the game.
How to Hotwire in Project Zomboid
1. Enter the vehicle and sit in the driver’s seat – the hotwire option will not be available from any other seat.
2. Press the V key to open the vehicle interaction menu.
3. Select the Hotwire Engine option, and your character will begin starting the vehicle without a key. After a successful hotwire, you will see exposed wires sticking out of the car’s ignition.
4. Start the car as usual – after a successful hotwire, the vehicle will be ready to drive and will remain unlocked even after you exit it.
Skills Needed to Hotwire in Project Zomboid
Hotwiring cars in Project Zomboid is not available from the very beginning of the game. To start a vehicle without a key, your character must first meet specific requirements related to certain skills. If you did not choose the Burglar profession, your character needs to have the required levels in two different skills.
- Electrical – Level 1
Having Electrical at level 1 represents basic knowledge of electrical systems. Without this skill, your character will not be able to manipulate the wires responsible for the vehicle’s ignition. - Mechanics – Level 2
Mechanics at level 2 is required for your character to understand the basic components of a car. Only then is it possible to interact with the vehicle’s systems and successfully hotwire it.
Only after both of these requirements are met will the Hotwire Engine option appear in the vehicle menu.
The easiest way to bypass the requirements mentioned above is to choose the Burglar profession in Project Zomboid. Characters with this profession can hotwire cars from the very beginning of the game, without the need to level up Electrical or Mechanics.
The Burglar has innate knowledge and experience that allow them to manipulate a vehicle’s wiring system without any additional preparation, making car hotwiring immediately available.

One of the most common mistakes is attempting to hotwire a car without sitting in the driver’s seat. The Hotwire Engine option will not be available unless your character is seated as the driver.
No fuel or a dead battery
Even after a successful hotwire, the car may fail to start. In many cases, the reason is an empty fuel tank or a dead battery, which players often mistake for a problem with the hotwiring mechanic.
Poor vehicle condition
Cars in very bad condition, especially those with heavily damaged engines, may appear completely broken. Hotwiring does not repair a vehicle – it only allows it to be started without a key.
Hotwire action interrupted
Moving your character or being attacked by zombies during the hotwire process will interrupt the action. If this happens, the entire process must be started again.
