The Ocean Monument is a massive structure hidden deep beneath the ocean’s surface, built from prismarine and resembling the ruins of an ancient civilization. However, it’s far more than just decoration – it’s a true challenge designed for more experienced players.
Ocean Monuments generate naturally on the ocean floor, typically in the Deep Ocean biome, far from land. Constructed using three types of prismarine blocks, the monument houses three Elder Guardians, sponge rooms, secret chambers with gold blocks, and of course, swarms of Guardians who won’t let you pass without a fight.
This structure is a rich source of unique resources, including:
- Sponges – perfect for draining large underwater areas.
- Gold blocks – hidden in the temple’s central chamber.
- Prismarine and sea lanterns – materials that can’t be found anywhere else.

How to find Ocean Monument in Minecraft
1. Cartographer Villager
The easiest way is to trade with a Cartographer Villager. Once you level them up to Journeyman, they’ll offer you an Ocean Explorer Map in exchange for emeralds. This map will lead you straight to the nearest structure.
2. Exploration
If you prefer classic adventuring, gear up with a boat, Water Breathing potions, and get ready for a longer journey. Head out into one of the ocean biomes – such as Deep Ocean, Deep Lukewarm Ocean, Deep Cold Ocean, or Deep Frozen Ocean – and look for the distinct prismarine structures underwater.
It’s actually easier to spot them at night, as Sea Lanterns within the monument glow in the darkness and can help guide your way.
Ocean Monument Loot
This structure doesn’t contain any chests, but it still holds unique and valuable loot that makes it well worth exploring. Here’s what you can find:
- Sponges – Found in special sponge rooms. Additionally, each Elder Guardian drops one wet sponge upon defeat.
- Gold Blocks – Hidden in a secret chamber at the very center of the monument, buried behind thick layers of prismarine.
- Prismarine Blocks – Various types such as dark prismarine, regular prismarine, and prismarine bricks – perfect for building, especially if you want an underwater civilization-style base.
- Sea Lanterns – Glowing blocks that light up the monument and can be collected for use in your own builds.

Guardians and Elder Guardians
While exploring the monument, you’ll encounter two types of hostile mobs: Guardians and Elder Guardians. Both mobs are unique and can be found only in this structure.
The Guardian is a small, fish-like mob that attacks players using a powerful laser beam. If it maintains line of sight for a few seconds, the laser deals significant damage. Additionally, Guardians are covered in spines that inflict damage when you hit them at the wrong time.
The Elder Guardian is a larger and much more dangerous version. There are always three of them in every Ocean Monument, and they deal more damage than regular Guardians. They also have a special ability: every few minutes, they apply the Mining Fatigue III effect, which makes breaking blocks extremely slow. Without potions and the right tools, conquering the monument can be nearly impossible.
