How to find an Ancient City in Minecraft

The Ancient City is a unique structure in Minecraft, located deep underground within the biome known as the Deep Dark. Reaching this place is a major challenge even for experienced players, as it is far from a typical temple with a basic loot chest and a few mobs. Instead, it’s a vast and shadowy ruin, where a single misstep can summon the Warden – an extremely powerful and dangerous opponent.

What sets the Ancient City apart isn’t just its eerie atmosphere, but also its exclusive content:

  • You’ll find items unavailable anywhere else, such as the Swift Sneak enchantment, which allows you to move faster while sneaking.
  • It contains Reinforced Deepslate, the hardest block in the game, which cannot be crafted.
  • There are also numerous Redstone components and structures, hinting at the existence of an ancient and advanced civilization.

Despite the lack of regular hostile mobs, the Deep Dark – and especially the Ancient Cities – are extremely dangerous. The main threat is the Warden, a creature that cannot see, but reacts sharply to sound. Triggering Sculk Shriekers multiple times will call it forth, turning your quiet exploration into a deadly encounter.

Exploring the Ancient City in complete silence, by the flickering light of candles, surrounded by mysterious ruins and hidden chests, creates an atmosphere unlike any other structure in the game. It’s more than a loot run – it’s a descent into the unknown.

How to find Deep Dark in Minecraft

Deep Dark is a mysterious biome found deep underground. It most commonly appears near biomes such as Jagged Peaks and Snowy Peaks, which feature steep, snow-covered mountains. It can also appear near other mountainous biomes, like Mountain Biomes. So, if you encounter these biomes on the surface, there’s a chance of finding Deep Dark nearby. To find it, you need to dig down to a depth between Y= -1 and Y= -64. It’s best to use tools enchanted with Efficiency (to speed up mining) and Unbreaking (to extend tool durability). Also, bring plenty of torches and food. Deep Dark is quite rare, so you may need to dig through multiple tunnels to finally discover it. However, once you do, you’ll notice distinct signs. Look for characteristic blocks like Sculk Sensors and Sculk Shriekers. Be cautious, as the second one can summon the Warden.

How to find Ancient City in Minecraft

Once you find yourself in the Deep Dark, you’ll need to dig really deep underground – ideally down to level Y= -51, since that’s where ancient structures are most likely to generate. When searching for an Ancient City, it’s best to explore large cave systems or use a night vision potion and a pickaxe enchanted with Efficiency to break through the stone faster.
