Silk Touch is one of the most interesting and practical enchantments in Minecraft, allowing you to collect a block exactly as it is, without changing its form, appearance, or properties.
How it works:
- Normally, when you break grass, you get plain dirt – but with this enchantment, you get the actual grass block.
- Glass normally shatters when mined, but with the enchantment, it stays intact when broken with a pickaxe.
- Diamond, coal, or copper ores can be collected in their raw block form.
- Fragile and rare blocks like glowstone, ice, or bookshelves can be moved without breaking.
Silk Touch gives you 100% control over what drops from a block. It’s extremely useful when you want to create creative and realistic builds, giving you access to blocks you normally wouldn’t be able to obtain. It also allows you to transport ready-made construction elements, mine raw ores, or protect rare materials from being lost.
You can apply Silk Touch to the following tools:
- Pickaxes – for mining ores, stone, and special blocks.
- Shovels – for collecting grass, clay, and dirt.
- Axes – for moving wooden blocks and bookshelves.
- Hoes – for harvesting decorative plant-based blocks.
- Shears – for collecting cobwebs and leaves.
How to Get Silk Touch
Below you will find detailed methods for obtaining the enchantment:
Using the Enchantment Table
One method is to use an Enchantment Table, but you’ll need to be patient, as the enchantment appears completely at random. Before you start using the table, you can place 15 bookshelves around it to unlock the maximum enchantment level (30). This gives you access to the most powerful enchantments. Insert the tool you want to enchant along with lapis lazuli. If Silk Touch doesn’t appear right away, you can enchant another cheap item to refresh the available enchantments.

Trading with a Librarian Villager
The most reliable method is, of course, trading with a Librarian Villager. This method allows you to keep the enchantment permanently once you get it and buy it whenever you want. Villagers can be found in any naturally generated village, and if there is no Librarian, you can create one yourself. When a Librarian first appears, they offer one enchanted book at the Novice level. If it’s not Silk Touch, you can break the lectern and place it again to change the trade. You can do this as many times as you want, as long as you haven’t made your first trade with them.

Getting an Enchanted Book from Loot or Fishing
One of the most reliable ways to obtain Silk Touch is by getting an Enchanted Book with this enchantment and then applying it to your tool using an anvil.

You can get such a book in two ways: as loot from chests in generated structures or as treasure while fishing. The world of Minecraft is full of generated structures that contain loot chests. Many of them have a chance to include enchanted books, and the best places to explore are:
- Mineshafts
- Strongholds
- Ancient Cities
- Desert Temples
- Jungle Temples
- Bastion Remnants
- Woodland Mansions
Fishing is a safer alternative, and although you usually catch fish, there is a small chance to get treasure – and in this category, you can also find enchanted books. If you want to increase the probability, you can use Luck of the Sea on your fishing rod.
