How to get String in Minecraft

In the world of Minecraft, every resource has great importance and often turns out to be the key to survival as well as building advanced structures. One of the seemingly modest items in the game is string – a thin, white material that does not naturally generate as a block, yet plays a crucial role in many crafting recipes and redstone mechanisms. Without it, you cannot craft a bow, the basic long-range weapon, or a fishing rod, essential for catching fish and treasures from the water. It is also required when crafting wool, candles, leads, or bundles.

All ways of getting String in Minecraft

This seemingly modest material can be obtained in several different ways, from fighting monsters to exploring structures and even trading.

Spiders and Cobwebs

The most obvious way to obtain string is by fighting spiders and cave spiders. When defeated, they usually drop 0–2 pieces, but if you use a weapon enchanted with Looting, you can get up to 5. Spiders appear at night on the surface and in dark caves, while cave spiders are found mainly in abandoned mineshafts. This method is quite risky, since fighting in the dark is always dangerous, but it provides quick and direct results.

Another option is to use a different source: cobwebs. You can find them in abandoned mineshafts, as well as in some structures such as fortresses or temples. Breaking a cobweb with the right tool will give you 1–4 pieces of string.

Chests in Structures

Another way to obtain this material is by exploring the world and opening chests that generate inside structures. In these chests you can find between 1 and 8 pieces of string, with the chance depending on the type of building. The most important places where you can search are:

  • Bastion Remnant
  • Desert Pyramid
  • Pillager Outpost
  • Trail Ruins
  • Woodland Mansion
  • Monster Room

Visiting a Jungle Temple

Another place you can visit is the Jungle Temple. Inside this structure, there is a hidden system of traps based on tripwires. In this case, string appears as part of the mechanism – a thin thread stretched across the floor, connected to tripwire hooks and dispensers with bows. If you carefully break this trap, you will receive a few pieces of the desired resource while also avoiding damage from the arrows.

Cats as Helpers

One of the more interesting and less obvious methods is obtaining string from a tamed cat. When you sleep, your cats may bring you gifts in the form of various items. This is a passive method that doesn’t require fighting or exploring, but there is only about a 17% chance of receiving this particular gift from your furry friend.

Bartering with Piglins

Another method is bartering with Piglins. Piglins are neutral mobs that inhabit the Nether, one of the more dangerous dimensions. You can encounter them mainly in Nether Wastes, Crimson Forest, and inside Bastion Remnants. To start bartering, you need to have gold ingots. Simply right-click on a Piglin while holding a gold ingot in your hand, and it will stop, carefully examine the gift, and then throw out a random item from its predefined loot pool. Among these rewards, you can also get string, with each barter giving between 3 and 9 pieces. Unfortunately, the chance for this drop is only around 5%, so it is not the most efficient way to spend your gold ingots.
