Terracotta is a special decorative block that combines durability with a unique aesthetic in many different colors. When smelted, it can be turned into a glazed version with beautiful geometric patterns. It’s perfect for building and decorating various structures, especially when used to create stunning mosaics. This block naturally generates in the desert-like Badlands biome, where it can be found in colors such as red, brown, orange, white, light gray, and uncolored variants. Outside of this biome, you won’t find it in the world, but you can still obtain it by crafting it yourself.

How to make Terracotta in Minecraft
If you don’t have access to the Badlands biome, you can craft the block yourself using clay. Here’s what you need to do:
- Find clay, which naturally generates underwater—mostly in rivers, lakes, and at the bottom of oceans. It has a light gray color and looks similar to mud.
- Mine it using a shovel.
- Turn it into a block. If you’ve collected clay balls, combine 4 of them in your inventory to make one.
- Smelt the block in a furnace to get the final product.

How to make glazed Terracotta in Minecraft
To get a block with a geometric pattern, you first need to prepare its colored version. It’s not possible to create a glazed one without dyeing it first. Here’s what you need to do:
- Combine the plain block with dye – place 8 around a single dye in the crafting table.
- Put one of the colored blocks into a furnace and smelt it.

How to dye Terracotta in Minecraft
To add color, you’ll need eight of the plain, uncolored version and one dye of your choice:
- Open the crafting table.
- Place 8 blocks around the edges, leaving the center slot empty.
- Put 1 dye in the center.
- Take the 8 colored results from the output slot.
This method works for all 16 available colors. You can mix dyes to create more complex shades, like magenta or light gray. Once dyed, these blocks are ready for use or further smelting if you want to add decorative patterns.

Colored clay blocks are a great building material that works well in a wide variety of projects, both for interiors and exteriors. Thanks to their natural texture and the wide range of available colors, they can be easily matched to almost any architectural style – from modern houses, through rustic villages, to futuristic cities. The patterned versions open up even more possibilities, allowing players to create decorative floors, ceilings, or walls with unique designs.
This block also combines well with other materials such as concrete, brick, wool, and wood. It can be used as a subtle color accent or as the main building material – it all depends on the player’s creativity. Unlike concrete, it doesn’t require water during crafting, which makes large-scale production much easier. Additionally, clay is fairly easy to obtain – just head to a river or lake, and you’ll find plenty of it there.
