In the world of Minecraft, there are many ways to light up your surroundings — from torches and glowstone to more advanced solutions. One of the most stylish and functional blocks is the Redstone Lamp, which only lights up when it receives a redstone signal. With it, you can create fully automated lighting systems that react to the time of day, player movement, or sounds.
How to craft a Redstone Lamp
To create a Redstone Lamp in Minecraft, you need one block of Glowstone and four pieces of Redstone Dust. Place them on the crafting table with the Glowstone in the center and the Redstone Dust around it. It’s a simple recipe that opens up endless possibilities – from stylish base lighting to fully automated systems that react to the time of day.
Get Glowstone
Glowstone is a block found exclusively in the Nether, forming clusters that hang from ceilings or float above lava lakes. Its bright golden glow can be seen from afar, making it easy to spot even in the darkest corners of the fiery dimension. When you find a cluster, it’s best to build a platform underneath to minimize the risk of losing materials. Glowstone can be broken with any tool, but a pickaxe works the fastest. When destroyed, the block drops 2–4 pieces of Glowstone Dust, which you can later combine in a crafting table to recreate a full Glowstone block. If you want to collect the entire block without breaking it into dust, use a pickaxe enchanted with Silk Touch.

Get Redstone Dust
Redstone Ore is found deep underground, mostly below level Y = 16, with the highest concentration around Y = -59. This block often appears near lava, so it’s worth being extra cautious while mining. To collect it, you’ll need an iron pickaxe or better, as weaker tools will destroy the ore without dropping anything. When mined, Redstone Ore drops 4–5 pieces of Redstone Dust, and with the Fortune enchantment, you can get up to 8.

Craft Redstone Lamp
Once you’ve gathered all the materials, open the crafting table and place a Glowstone block in the center slot. Then, arrange Redstone Dust around it – one on each side. You’ll automatically receive a ready-made light source.

How to turn on Redstone Lamp
The lamp itself is just the beginning – to actually light up, it needs a signal to activate it. In Minecraft, there are plenty of ways to turn it on: from simple levers and buttons to advanced automatic systems that react to movement or the time of day.

Lever
A lever is one of the simplest ways to directly activate a light source. You can attach it directly to the lamp, and once it’s in place, right-click to flip it. Clicking again will turn the light off. To craft a lever, you’ll need one stick and one cobblestone – place the cobblestone on the bottom and the stick above it in the crafting table, and you’re done.
Redstone Block
A Redstone Block can serve as a permanent power source – simply place it right next to the lamp, and the light will stay on constantly. You can easily craft this block by placing nine pieces of Redstone Dust in the crafting table.
Redstone Torch
A Redstone Torch is another simple power source that permanently activates a lamp when placed nearby. Just place the torch directly under the lamp, and the light will turn on automatically.
Button
A button is one of the simplest devices that sends a short signal, perfect for temporarily activating a light source. Just attach it to the lamp and right-click – the light will turn on for a moment and then automatically turn off after a few seconds. It’s a great option if you want to create a temporary switch effect, for example in hallways. To craft a button, you need one piece of stone or one wooden plank – simply place it in the crafting table to get a ready-to-use button.
Pressure Plate
A Pressure Plate allows the light to turn on only when a player or mob steps on it. You can easily place the plate on or near the lamp and connect it with redstone. It’s a great solution for entrances or automatic doors.
Daylight Detector
A Daylight Detector is the perfect solution if you want your lamp to turn on automatically at dusk and turn off at dawn. This device reacts to the sunlight level and during the day sends a redstone signal that powers the lamp. There’s also an option to make the lamp light up at night – simply right-click the detector to invert its settings. From that point on, the lamp will only glow at night and turn off as the day begins.
Sculk Sensor
The Sculk Sensor is one of the most interesting blocks that can be used to activate lighting. It detects vibrations and sounds in its surroundings – such as player footsteps, doors opening, or items falling – and sends out a short redstone signal in response. If you want to use the Sculk Sensor as an activator, place it near the lamp, for example on top of it, and the light will turn on whenever any sound is detected.
Besides these activators, there are many other ways to light up a Redstone Lamp in Minecraft. With a bit of creativity, you can create truly impressive lighting systems. For example, an Observer can detect changes in the environment – such as doors opening or plants growing – and send a short pulse to turn the light on. A Repeater, on the other hand, can delay or strengthen the signal, which is perfect for creating pulsating lights. A Tripwire Hook can activate the lamp when someone walks through a stretched string, and a Trapped Chest will do the same when someone opens it. In the end, the only real limit is your imagination.
How to make an Automatic Night Light in Minecraft
If you want to create an impressive nighttime lighting system, for example in your Minecraft city, all you need is a simple setup with a Daylight Detector. It’s a perfect solution for streets, farms, or decorative pathways – set it up once, and you’ll never have to worry about turning the lights on again.

The first step is to craft the Daylight Detector itself. To make one, place the following items in the crafting table:
- 3 Glass
- 3 Nether Quartz
- 3 Wooden Slabs
Arrange them with the glass on the top row, the quartz in the middle, and the slabs on the bottom.
Once you have your Daylight Detector ready, place it on top of a Redstone Lamp or connect it to the lamp using redstone dust. Then, right-click the Daylight Detector to switch it to inverted mode. From now on, instead of turning the light on during the day, it will activate at night.
