In the world of Minecraft, colors play a huge role — they allow you to dye armor, glass, wool, and more to give everything around you a unique and personal touch. Blue is a classic choice — clean, vibrant, and perfect for decorations or builds that are meant to stand out. But how exactly do you get this color? In this article, we’ll explain how to obtain blue dye in two ways: by using lapis lazuli and by using cornflowers.
How to get blue dye using Cornflower
If mining isn’t your favorite activity, you can craft blue dye from flowers instead. Cornflowers are bright-blue blossoms that grow in biomes such as Plains, Flower Forest, and, in some spots, Sunflower Plains. Just keep an eye out—their vivid color stands out sharply against the green grass. To speed up gathering, use bone meal on grass in one of those biomes; it’s a handy way to generate cornflowers right where you are without trekking across the map.

Once you’ve collected enough flowers, place each one in a crafting table—every cornflower yields a single unit of blue dye.

How to get blue dye using Lapis Lazuli
Lapis Lazuli is one of those Minecraft resources that serves more than one purpose. Most players associate it with enchanting items, and many don’t realize it can also be used in another way. It appears as a blue-speckled ore that’s easy to recognize among other blocks. You’ll most commonly find it between levels Y=0 and Y=16, in caves (especially deep ones like lush caves), during strip mining, or sometimes as loot in dungeons and chests. To mine it, you’ll need an iron pickaxe or better. Using a pickaxe enchanted with Fortune can be very beneficial, potentially giving you several pieces of the mineral from a single block.

Once you’ve collected it, simply place one piece into a crafting table to receive a single unit of blue dye.

Blue dye can be used for both aesthetic and practical purposes:
- Dyeing wool – useful for flags and themed builds
- Creating colored glass and panes – looks great in modern or magical structures
- Coloring leather armor – perfect for customizing your character’s look
- Crafting blue candles – great for atmospheric decorations
- Designing banners – use it to make patterns, symbols, and logos
- Mixing with other dyes – for example, combine with red dye to create purple
