Taming the Donkey in Minecraft
Before you can befriend one of the donkeys, you first have to find it. This isn’t too complicated, but donkeys don’t spawn just anywhere, so it’s important to know where to look. They spawn naturally in the following biomes:
- Meadow
- Plains
- Sunflower Plains
- Savanna

These biomes are generally open and flat, which makes them perfect for spawning passive mobs. The mob you’re looking for usually appears in small groups of 1 to 6, and unlike horses, all donkeys look exactly the same.
Once you find a donkey, it’s time to start taming it. Unlike other mobs like wolves or cats, you don’t need any special item to tame a donkey. All you have to do is approach it with an empty hand and try to mount it (by right-clicking).
The donkey will most likely buck you off after a few seconds, and that’s completely normal. Your job is to keep trying until you see hearts appear above its head – that means it has been fully tamed and now trusts you.

How to put a Chest on a Donkey in Minecraft
Once you have a tamed donkey, you can make it even more useful by attaching a chest to it. This feature is what truly sets donkeys apart from other rideable mobs. You can’t put chests on horses, and llamas are more stubborn and harder to control.
To attach a chest to your donkey, simply hold a chest in your hand and right-click on the tamed donkey. After a moment, small chest boxes will appear on its side, and the donkey will gain 15 extra inventory slots.
