How to tame a Parrot in Minecraft

Parrots in Minecraft are colorful, flying creatures classified as passive and tameable mobs. They spawn exclusively in the jungle biome and can be seen flying above leaves, grass, or even just above the roots of trees. They come in five different colors: red, blue, green, cyan, and gray — each resembling a real-life parrot species. While killing parrots may yield feathers (used for crafting arrows), that’s not their main appeal. Their most interesting feature is their ability to imitate the sounds of hostile mobs, such as the hissing of Creepers or the noises made by Ghasts, Zombies, and Endermen. Parrots can also dance near an active jukebox, rhythmically moving to the music being played.

Parrot Taming Guide

To make this colorful bird your loyal companion, you’ll need to complete a few simple tasks:

1. Gather some seeds

Before you plunge into the dense jungle, you need to be properly prepared — and that starts with gathering plenty of seeds to help you tame this colorful mob. Each taming attempt has a relatively low success rate, so it’s smart to stock up. You can use any of the following seeds:

  • Wheat seeds
  • Melon seeds
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Beetroot seeds
  • Torchflower seeds

Wheat seeds are the easiest to obtain — just break tall grass, which grows in almost every biome. Melon and pumpkin seeds come from their respective fruits or can be found in village and temple chests. Beetroot seeds often appear in village farms, while Torchflower seeds are a rarer option tied to the Sniffer mob and take a bit more effort to acquire.

2. Find a Parrot and offer it some seeds

The next step is to head into the jungle. These colorful birds can be seen flying just above the treetops or walking on the grass — keep your eyes open, as they’re small and can easily blend into the environment. Once you spot one, approach it calmly with seeds in your hand. Right-click on the parrot to feed it.

Each attempt has a 10–33% chance of taming the parrot, so you may need to feed it multiple times. If you’re successful, hearts will appear above the bird, and it will become your new loyal companion. From that moment on, it will follow you around—and might even perch on your shoulder!

Parrots in Minecraft: More Than Just Colorful Birds

These charming creatures, which come in five colors (red, blue, green, cyan, and gray), are capable of much more than you might think:

  • They can dance – if you play a music disc in a jukebox near a parrot, it will start rhythmically moving, bobbing its head and bouncing along to the beat.
  • They sit on the player’s shoulder – once tamed, a parrot can perch on your shoulder if you walk close to it. You can carry two at once, one on each shoulder. They will dismount if you jump, fall, take damage, or touch water or fire.
  • They warn you about monsters – parrots mimic the sounds of nearby hostile mobs (within about 20 blocks), such as creeper hissing, zombie groans, or ghast screams. It’s a great early warning system when exploring or building.
  • They cannot be bred – unlike many other animals in Minecraft, parrots cannot reproduce. They don’t lay eggs, so if you want more, you’ll need to find and tame them individually in jungle biomes.
  • Deadly cookie – if you feed a parrot a cookie, it will instantly die, releasing poison particles. This reflects the real-life danger of chocolate for birds.
  • They don’t attack or get attacked – parrots are completely passive mobs. They won’t attack anything, and no other mobs (besides players) will harm them. You can safely leave them in your base.
  • They don’t drown – parrots can’t drown, but when they fall into water, they frantically flap their wings until they manage to escape onto land.
