The world of Minecraft is full of valuable resources, but not all of them are easy to obtain. Different ores generate at different heights, in specific biomes, with varying frequency and in different formations. Understanding where and how to find these resources can greatly speed up your progress—whether you’re just trying to survive or aiming to build the most powerful structures in the game. In this guide, we’ll cover the distribution of every ore in Minecraft, from the most common coal to the rare and elusive Ancient Debris.
Overworld Ores
Coal
Best Y-level for Coal Ore: Y=95
Y-level range: 0 to 320

Coal is the most common ore in the game. It often appears on the sides of mountains and cliffs, especially in Windswept Hills, covering stone walls. It generates in very large clusters and is often visible without any digging.
Copper
Best Y-level for Copper Ore: Y=48
Y-level range: -16 to 112

Copper mostly generates in caves and underground tunnels. In Dripstone Caves, it can form huge veins. In other biomes, it is noticeably rarer and more scattered.
Diamond
Best Y-level for Diamond Ore: Y=-59
Y-level range: -64 to 16

Diamond is rare, which is why strip mining is the most effective method for finding it. You’ll often find small but frequent groups of 1–3 blocks, hidden inside solid stone.
Emerald
Best Y-level for Emerald Ore: Y=236
Y-level range: -16 to 320

Emerald only spawns in mountain biomes and always as a single block. It’s the rarest ore in terms of generation and doesn’t appear in veins.
Gold
Best Y-level for Gold Ore: Y=-16
Y-level range: -64 to 256

Gold is relatively rare in most biomes, but in Badlands it generates extremely frequently — even exposed on the surface of cliffs. It’s by far the best biome for gold mining.
Iron
Best Y-level for Iron Ore: Y=16 or Y=232
Y-level range: -64 to 320

Iron can be found almost everywhere, but it’s easiest to find in mountain biomes like Jagged Peaks and Snowy Slopes. In these high-altitude areas, it can form massive veins, while underground it appears in smaller but frequent groups.
Lapis Lazuli
Best Y-level for Lapis Lazuli Ore: Y=-1
Y-level range: 65 to 320

Lapis Lazuli is fairly rare and doesn’t usually appear on cave walls — it generates in a hidden way and often requires digging through stone to find. It typically appears in small groups of a few blocks.
Redstone
Best Y-level for Redstone Ore: Y=-59
Y-level range: -64 to 16

Redstone is found deep underground and rarely appears in open cave spaces. It spawns fairly often, but only within a specific Y-level range, and is best found by digging in solid blocks.
Nether Ores
Nether Quartz
Best Y-level for Nether Quartz: Y=10 to Y=114
Y-level range: 10 to 127

Nether Quartz is found all over the Nether, especially in the Nether Wastes and Soul Sand Valley biomes. It typically spawns in groups of 4–10 blocks and is very easy to spot on cave walls and surfaces.
Nether Gold
Best Y-level for Nether Gold: Y=15
Y-level range: 10 to 116

Nether Gold is most common in Nether Wastes and usually appears in smaller clusters. It also frequently generates on surfaces — even on the ceilings of tunnels — making it easy to mine while exploring.
Ancient Debris
Best Y-level for Ancient Debris: Y=16
Y-level range: 8 to 119

Ancient Debris is the rarest ore in the entire game, found deep in the Nether in very small amounts. It appears in tiny veins and is best located using TNT or bed mining due to its low visibility and rarity.
