Chickens in Minecraft eat all types of seeds, including Wheat Seeds, Beetroot Seeds, Melon Seeds, Pumpkin Seeds, Torchflower Seeds, and Pitcher Pods. These items can be used to breed chickens, lead them around the world, and build efficient chicken farms. In this guide, you’ll learn everything chickens can eat and how each food item works.
All Foods Chickens Eat in Minecraft
Below, you’ll find a list of the six types of seeds that chickens can eat in Minecraft.
Wheat Seeds
Wheat Seeds are the most basic and easiest-to-obtain food source for chickens in Minecraft. Feeding Wheat Seeds to two adult chickens activates breeding mode, causing them to produce a baby chick shortly afterward. Wheat Seeds can also be used to attract chickens – if you hold them in your hand, nearby chickens will follow you, making it much easier to build a chicken farm or move them to a new location.
The easiest way to obtain Wheat Seeds is by breaking tall grass, which can be found in most Minecraft biomes. Seeds can also be found in village chests and obtained from suspicious gravel in Trail Ruins structures. Additionally, there is a chance to purchase Wheat Seeds from a Wandering Trader.

Beetroot Seeds
Beetroot Seeds can be used to breed chickens and attract them, causing nearby chickens to follow the player. The easiest way to obtain Beetroot Seeds is by harvesting fully grown beetroot crops, which naturally generate in Plains Villages and Desert Villages. They can also be found in chests located in Mineshafts, Monster Rooms, End Cities, Woodland Mansions, and Snowy Village houses, obtained from suspicious gravel in Trail Ruins, or purchased from a Wandering Trader.

Melon Seeds
Although Melon Seeds are less common than Wheat Seeds, chickens can still eat them for breeding and attraction purposes. Players can obtain Melon Seeds by breaking melon blocks found in Woodland Mansion farm rooms, Savanna Villages, and Desert Villages. They can also be crafted from a Melon Slice, found in chests located in Mineshafts, Monster Rooms, and Woodland Mansions, or purchased from a Wandering Trader.

Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpkin Seeds are another type of seed that chickens can eat in Minecraft. Just like other seeds, they can be used to breed chickens and attract them, causing nearby chickens to follow the player. Pumpkin Seeds can be obtained by breaking pumpkins found in Taiga Villages, Snowy Taiga Villages, and Woodland Mansion farm rooms. They can also be crafted from a pumpkin, found in chests located in Mineshafts, Monster Rooms, Woodland Mansions, and Taiga Village houses, or purchased from a Wandering Trader.

Torchflower Seeds
Torchflower Seeds are one of the more unusual foods that chickens can eat in Minecraft. Like all other seed types, they can be used to breed chickens and attract them, causing nearby chickens to follow the player. Unlike most seeds, Torchflower Seeds cannot be found in villages or loot chests. Instead, they are obtained exclusively through Sniffers, which have a chance to dig them up from blocks such as Dirt, Grass Block, Podzol, Coarse Dirt, Rooted Dirt, Moss Block, Pale Moss Block, Mud, and Muddy Mangrove Roots.

Pitcher Pod
Just like Torchflower Seeds, Pitcher Pods are a unique chicken food obtained through the Sniffer mob. While they can be used to breed chickens, acquiring them is far more difficult than collecting regular seeds. Sniffers have a chance to uncover Pitcher Pods while digging in Dirt, Grass Blocks, Podzol, Coarse Dirt, Rooted Dirt, Moss Blocks, Pale Moss Blocks, Mud, and Muddy Mangrove Roots.
