All Terraria Bosses in Order – Boss Progression Guide

One of the most important elements of Terraria are the boss fights – they mark the stages of progression, forcing the player to upgrade their equipment, build arenas, and search for strategies. Each boss is a unique challenge that opens the path to further advancement. The game divides them into two groups: those before Hardmode and those after, unlocked by defeating the Wall of Flesh. The Wall of Flesh is a true milestone that begins the real adventure – the world becomes far more dangerous, with new biomes, stronger enemies, and much more powerful bosses appearing.

In this guide, we will take a closer look at all of them, from the simplest pre-Hardmode bosses to the final Moon Lord, who symbolically marks the end of progression in Terraria.

Pre-Hardmode Bosses:

  1. King Slime
  2. Eye of Cthulhu
  3. Eater of Worlds
  4. Brain of Cthulhu
  5. Queen Bee
  6. Skeletron
  7. Deerclops
  8. Wall of Flesh

Hardmode Bosses:

  1. Queen Slime
  2. The Twins
  3. The Destroyer
  4. Skeletron Prime
  5. Mechdusa
  6. Plantera
  7. Golem
  8. Duke Fishron
  9. Empress of Light
  10. Lunatic Cultist
  11. Moon Lord

Pre-Hardmode Bosses in Terraria

1. King Slime

King Slime is often considered the first real challenge for new players. He can appear randomly on the surface during the day, automatically during the Slime Rain event after defeating about 150 slimes, or by using a Slime Crown crafted at a Demon or Crimson Altar. The boss only spawns on the surface of the world, where it’s best to prepare an arena with ropes or platforms for easier movement. During the fight, weapons with area-of-effect or piercing damage are especially useful.

2. Eye of Cthulhu

Eye of Cthulhu can spawn naturally at night if the player has at least 200 health, more than 10 defense, and there are at least three NPCs living in the world. It will only appear if it has not been defeated previously in that world. Alternatively, if it does not spawn on its own, you can summon it using a Suspicious Looking Eye, which works only at night. The battle always takes place on the surface.

3. Eater of Worlds

Eater of Worlds is a massive worm boss that appears in the Corruption biome and is made up of multiple segments, each capable of attacking independently. To achieve victory, nearly all of its body segments must be destroyed. It can be summoned by breaking three Shadow Orbs, but it may also be called forth using Worm Food.

4. Brain of Cthulhu

Brain of Cthulhu is summoned after breaking three Crimson Hearts located in the underground chasms, or manually by using a Bloody Spine. The fight consists of two phases: in the first, the boss is surrounded by Creepers that must be destroyed, and then it enters the second phase, where it teleports aggressively toward the player and attempts to defeat them.

5. Queen Bee

Queen Bee is a boss tied to the Underground Jungle, appearing inside bee hives when the Larva within is destroyed. Alternatively, she can be summoned by using an Abeemination anywhere in the Jungle biome. In battle, Queen Bee uses several attack patterns, such as charging at the player, summoning swarms of bees, and firing stingers. Defeating this boss is not required for progression, but it provides access to unique rewards that are especially useful when preparing for the fight against the Wall of Flesh.

6. Skeletron

Skeletron appears at the entrance to the Dungeon, and to summon him you must speak with the Old Man NPC standing outside. After talking to him at night, he will activate his curse. If you do not defeat Skeletron before the night ends, he will begin spinning at very high speed, dealing lethal damage that will almost certainly kill the player. Defeating Skeletron is necessary to gain access to the Dungeon.

7. Deerclops

Deerclops is a boss brought into Terraria from the world of Don’t Starve Together. This enormous deer appears in the Snow biome, where it can naturally spawn at midnight during a Blizzard if the player has at least 200 health or 9 defense. Defeating him is not required for progression, but he serves as an interesting challenge toward the end of Pre-Hardmode.

8. Wall of Flesh

Wall of Flesh appears in the Underworld as a wall that spans the entire height of the screen. It can be summoned by throwing a Voodoo Doll into lava while the Guide NPC is alive. Defeating it always ends the Pre-Hardmode stage and brings the world into Hardmode, making this fight the most important step in progression. The Wall of Flesh slowly moves in one direction, increasing its speed as its health decreases.

Hardmode Bosses in Terraria

1. Queen Slime

Queen Slime is the first Hardmode boss, summoned with a Gelatin Crystal found in the Underground Hallow. She is optional, but serves as a good transition between the start of Hardmode and the fights against the mechanical bosses. During the battle she summons minions such as Crystal Slimes, Bouncy Slimes, and Heavenly Slimes. In the first phase the fight resembles that of King Slime, while in the second phase she takes to the air and begins attacking with projectiles.

2. The Twins

The Twins are an upgraded version of the Eye of Cthulhu, consisting of two independent entities: Retinazer and Spazmatism. They are summoned using a Mechanical Eye, which can only be used at night. Retinazer focuses on shooting Death Lasers, while Spazmatism prefers close-range attacks, charging at the player and spitting flames.

3. The Destroyer

The Destroyer is a mechanical version of the Eater of Worlds, a gigantic worm made up of many segments that fire lasers, and when destroyed, release flying Probes. It is summoned with a Mechanical Worm, which can be used at night in any surface location. Due to its great length, it is especially vulnerable to area-of-effect weapons.

4. Skeletron Prime

Skeletron Prime is an upgraded, mechanical version of Skeletron. It consists of a head and four arms: a saw, a laser gun, a hammer, and a cannon. It can be summoned at night using the Mechanical Skull. Just like with the regular Skeletron, defeating the head alone is enough to win the fight – destroying the arms is not required, although they make the battle much more difficult.

5. Mechdusa

Mechdusa is a fusion of all three Mechanical Bosses into one extremely challenging fight. It has the highest health pool of any boss in the game, even surpassing the Moon Lord. It can only be summoned in special “Everything” worlds by using the item Ocram’s Razor. In these worlds, the Mechanical Bosses cannot be fought separately – instead, players face the chance to battle them all at once as Mechdusa.

6. Plantera

Plantera is a giant flower that can only be summoned in the Underground Jungle. To do this, you must destroy a Plantera’s Bulb, which usually appears in this biome only after defeating the three mechanical bosses. The fight has two phases – in the first, Plantera moves slowly, attaching itself to blocks with vines and attacking with seeds, while in the second it becomes faster and more aggressive, summoning minions. Defeating Plantera is required to unlock further progression, as stronger enemies will begin to appear in the Dungeon from that point on.

7. Golem

Golem becomes available only after defeating Plantera, as a Temple Key is required to enter the Jungle Temple. It is summoned using a Lihzahrd Power Cell at a Lihzahrd Altar inside the temple. The fight has two phases: in the first, the player can attack its fists and head, and after the head is destroyed, it detaches while the body jumps around and delivers punches.

8. Duke Fishron

Duke Fishron is a hybrid of pig, shark, and dragon that can be summoned in the Ocean biome. To start the fight, you must use a Truffle Worm as bait while fishing. At first, Duke Fishron charges toward the player, while in the second phase it gains glowing eyes and summons powerful Cthulhunados.

9. Empress of Light

The Empress of Light can be summoned by killing a Prismatic Lacewing, which naturally appears at night in the Hallow biome. This fight is optional, but it is worth attempting due to the large number of spectacular attacks and its very high difficulty level. Defeating her grants the unique weapon Terraprisma, which is available only from this version of the battle.

10. Lunatic Cultist

Lunatic Cultist is unlocked only after defeating Golem and appears at the entrance to the Dungeon when you kill the four cultists standing in front of the doors. The Cultist flies around the arena and uses a variety of attacks, ranging from fireballs, lightning, and ice projectiles to summoning illusions of itself. If you hit a false clone, it may summon additional threats. Defeating the Cultist is crucial for progression, as it triggers the Lunar Events, which directly lead to the battle against the Moon Lord.

11. Moon Lord

Moon Lord is the final boss in Terraria and the ultimate endgame event. He can be summoned after defeating all four Celestial Pillars during the Lunar Events or manually by using a Celestial Sigil. Moon Lord has two hands and a head, each containing an eye that must be destroyed in order to unlock the core eye in his chest. Only after destroying this core can the boss be defeated. Ending the fight officially marks the conclusion of Terraria’s progression.
