In Terraria, the world is made up of many diverse biomes, each with its own climate, appearance, and dangers. In this guide, we’ll cover all the Pre-Hardmode biomes that can be encountered before the world becomes even more challenging after defeating the Wall of Flesh.
1. Space
Space is the highest layer of the world, with a black background filled with stars visible even during the day. There are no natural blocks or structures – the area is empty, except for the Floating Islands that drift near the edge of the sky. At night, Fallen Stars can be seen falling, and among the clouds, Harpies can be spotted patrolling the heaven.

2. Surface and Underground
Forest Biome in Terraria
Forest is a calm, natural place where every adventure begins. The surface is covered with green grass, and tall trees of various trunk and leaf colors rise from the ground, along with flowers and mushrooms. Small patches of clay and stone can be found here, providing useful resources at the start of the game. The Forest has a peaceful atmosphere, occasionally disturbed by simple enemies such as Slimes or Zombies.

Snow Biome in Terraria
A land covered with a thick layer of snow, where tall trees bend under its weight. The surface is often uneven, full of gentle snowdrifts and small hills, with frozen lakes scattered between them. You’ll mostly find Snow Blocks and Ice Blocks here. During the day, Penguins wander around, while at night Ice Slimes, Zombies, and other creatures appear.

Desert Biome in Terraria
Desert is a vast, dry land stretching under the scorching sun. The ground consists mainly of Sand Blocks and Hardened Sand, with Cactuses growing between them. Here and there, you can find Desert Fossils and small Oases with water and palm trees that soften the harsh desert climate. During the day, Vultures circle above the sands, while Antlions emerge from the dunes, ready to attack the player. At night, the desert becomes cooler, and Zombies and Scorpions appear.

Corruption Biome in Terraria
Corruption is a dark, infected land with a dirty violet hue. The ground is covered in Corruption Grass, rivers appear toxic, and the plants look twisted and sickly. Ebonstone and Ebonsand are the main blocks found here, along with vegetation like Corrupt Thorns and Vile Mushrooms. During the day, you’ll face enemies such as Eaters of Souls and Corrupt Slimes, while at night Dark Mummies and Reapers appear. The atmosphere here is thick and ominous, giving the whole place a sense of spreading decay.

Crimson Biome in Terraria
Crimson is a grotesque, blood-soaked land that looks like living flesh, filled with pulsing veins in shades of red and pink. It’s covered in Crimson Grass, and instead of ordinary dirt, you’ll find Crimstone and Crimsand. The area contains Blood Moss and Decay Plants, among which wander creatures like Face Monsters and Blood Crawlers. At night, Crimeras and Blood Zombies emerge from the shadows, turning the already eerie landscape into something truly nightmarish. The place feels like a fragment of a living, diseased organism slowly corroding the surrounding world.

Jungle Biome in Terraria
Jungle is dense with lush greenery, towering trees, thick leaves, and winding vines. The ground is built from Mud Blocks overgrown with Jungle Grass, forming uneven terrain with pools, overhangs, and tangled roots. You’ll see broad leaves, patches of bamboo, and wild growth crowding every ledge. Creatures commonly found here include Jungle Slimes, Hornets, Snatchers, Man Eaters, Jungle Bats, and Piranhas, with the rare Doctor Bones sometimes roaming the surface. The palette is deep green and humid, the vegetation tight and overbearing, and nature feels rampant and untamed.

Dungeon Biome in Terraria
Dungeon is a vast underground labyrinth made of bricks, found on either the far left or right side of the world. Its entrance resembles an ancient temple and leads deep below the surface, reaching almost to the Underworld. The place features unique wall patterns and decorations such as bookshelves, chains, and ancient traps. Access to its depths becomes possible only after defeating Skeletron. Inside, you’ll find locked golden chests, unique furniture, traps, levers, and switches scattered throughout the halls.

Ocean Biome in Terraria
Ocean is a biome located at the edges of the world, consisting of wide beaches and a vast stretch of open water. Along the shore you’ll find Sand Blocks, Shell Blocks, and occasionally Coral. The water here is deep and extends far into the seafloor. The ocean hosts diverse marine life, including Sharks, Jellyfish, and Crabs, which can be seen moving near the seabed. At night, the shoreline can be attacked by various aggressive monsters emerging from the darkness.

Glowing Mushroom Biome in Terraria
Glowing Mushroom biome is a bluish, luminous forest of mushrooms that can be created by the player on the surface. It does not appear naturally — the player must build it by planting Mushroom Grass Seeds on Mud Blocks. Once the grass spreads across a large enough area, a Glowing Mushroom biome forms, where the Truffle NPC can later move in. Among the glowing caps wander enemies such as Mushroom Slimes, Spore Bats, and Fungi Bulbs, whose presence, combined with the mystical glow of the place, creates a dreamlike yet unsettling atmosphere.

3. Cavern
Ice Biome
Ice Biome is an underground frozen realm filled with layers of rock, earth, and snow, where the stone has turned into Ice Blocks and Blue Ice, forming cold natural structures and frozen caves. The walls are lined with Ice Crystals and frozen spikes that glimmer faintly in the dark. Here you can encounter creatures such as Ice Slimes, Undead Vikings, and Armored Skeletons, wandering through the cold silence of this frozen world.

Underground Mushroom
Underground Mushroom is a magical underground zone filled with subtle bluish light and covered in Mushroom Grass, which coats the ground in glowing shades. The dominant features of this environment are Mushroom Stone, Mushroom Blocks, and clusters of Glowing Mushrooms growing from the surface. Here you can encounter creatures unique to the fungal world, such as Spore Bats and Mushroom Slimes.

Underground Desert
Underground Desert is a desert zone located beneath the surface Desert, made mostly of Sandstone Blocks and Hardened Sand. It contains a network of caves and tunnels connected in a structure resembling an anthill. This place is filled with numerous traps, making exploration quite a challenge. It is inhabited by creatures typical of arid, desert environments.

Underground Jungle
Underground Jungle is a winding labyrinth hidden beneath the surface Jungle, filled with muddy earth and overgrown with wild vegetation. You can find giant roots and glowing mushrooms that cast a bright light, creating a unique tropical atmosphere. Underground rivers flow through the tunnels, and you’ll encounter creatures typical of the Jungle. Though moisture and thick plant life dominate every corridor, nature seems to struggle against the darkness, creating a fascinating and vibrant effect.

4. Underworld
Underworld is the lowest, hellish layer of the world, filled with lava and deadly dangers. The entire area is a maze of lava lakes, ash-covered pillars, and Hellstone that radiates intense heat and burns on contact. Deep below lie the ruins of Ruined Houses, containing valuable loot, Shadow Chests, Hellforges, and other treasures. This is where powerful enemies such as Fire Imps, Lava Slimes, Hellbats, and many others spawn. It is also the place where you can summon the Wall of Flesh, whose defeat transforms the world into Hardmode.

5. Mini Biomes
Aether
Aether generates only once when the world is created, usually within the Underground or Cavern layers on the same side of the world as the Jungle. At its center lies a large pool of Shimmer, surrounded by Gem Trees. The background of the Aether resembles a night sky filled with falling stars. Here you can encounter creatures such as Shimmer Slimes and Faelings.

Bee Hive
Bee Hive is a unique area hidden within the Underground Jungle, made entirely of Hive Blocks. Inside, there is a pool of honey and larvae, whose destruction summons the Queen Bee.

Granite Cave
Granite Caves are made entirely of Granite Blocks and are found in the Cavern layer. They are spacious, and enemies such as Granite Elementals and Granite Golems appear within them. You can often find small granite structures containing Granite Chests filled with loot.

Marble Cave
Marble Caves are made entirely of Marble Blocks and Marble Walls. They usually appear as long, horizontal tunnels, and inside you can find unique Pots and small Underground Cabins containing Marble Chests. Enemies such as Medusas and Hoplites spawn here, posing a serious challenge even in the later stages of the game.

Graveyard
Graveyard does not generate naturally but forms when at least five Tombstones are placed close together. As their number increases, the effects become stronger – the lighting turns desaturated, lightning flashes in the background, and Ecto Mist rises from the ground, creating a gloomy atmosphere. In addition, unique enemies begin to appear both during the day and at night.

Oasis
Oasis generates naturally within the Desert. In its center lies a fairly large lake surrounded by palm trees and plants such as cacti, ferns, and flowers. Cattail Plants grow in the water, while Dragonflies can be seen flying around above it.

Glowing Moss
Glowing Moss is an underground area found in the Cavern layer, where every stone block is covered in glowing moss that lights up the darkness with colors ranging from green and blue to purple and pink. Each world contains only one color variant of glowing moss. It is a quiet and safe part of the world, with no unique enemies appearing within it.

Jungle Temple
Jungle Temple is a massive ancient structure hidden deep beneath the Underground Jungle, built from Lihzahrd Bricks and covered in vines, giving it the appearance of a forgotten sanctuary. Inside lies a network of corridors filled with traps and mechanisms. The Temple is home to Lihzahrds and Flying Snakes, guardians that protect its valuable treasures such as Lihzahrd Chests and the Lihzahrd Altar – the place where Golem can be summoned.

Meteorite
Meteorite forms when a meteor crashes onto the surface of the world, leaving behind a crater filled with Meteorite ore. This area does not exist at the start of the game – it can only appear after defeating either the Eater of Worlds or the Brain of Cthulhu. Once one of these bosses has been defeated, there is a chance for a meteor to fall the following night

Spider Nest
Spider Nest is characterized by its almost pitch-black walls and dense webs that regrow quickly, making the place feel almost alive. Sometimes you can find web-covered chests hidden within the strands.

Ash Forest
Ash Forests are barren, scorched forests that grow on the edges of the Underworld. They are covered in Ash Grass and dotted with tall, charred Ash Trees, which are the only form of vegetation in this fiery environment.
