Light in Minecraft is much more than just a way to brighten up the darkness. Proper lighting determines the safety of your base, prevents hostile mob spawns, and also plays a key decorative and atmospheric role. In this guide, we will take a look at all the light sources you can encounter in the world of Minecraft.
List of All Light Blocks in Minecraft
Below you will find all light sources in Minecraft, starting with the brightest ones and ending with those that emit the least amount of light.
Beacon
Beacon is one of the most advanced light-emitting blocks (and one of the brightest, as it emits light at level 15) in Minecraft. Its true power, however, lies in what happens after it is activated. When placed on a pyramid made of metal blocks, a Beacon can serve as a landmark by projecting a distinctive beam of light into the sky. Additionally, it provides powerful status effects to players within its range, such as increased speed, faster mining, or regeneration. You can craft a Beacon by combining a Nether Star, 5 glass, and 3 obsidian.

Conduit
Conduit is an underwater block that emits light at level 15 and, once activated, releases a distinctive glow while providing players with various effects that improve ocean exploration. To craft it, you need 1 Heart of the Sea and 8 nautilus shells.

Campfire
Campfire is a light-emitting block that shines at level 15 once placed. It can be crafted using 3 sticks, 1 coal or charcoal, and 3 wooden logs or wood blocks. After being placed, it generates a characteristic column of smoke that can be seen from a long distance.

Copper Bulb
Copper Bulb is a modern block that emits light at level 15 when turned on. It operates using a redstone signal – once powered, it turns on or off and keeps its state even after the power is disconnected. It can be crafted by combining 3 copper blocks, 1 blaze rod, and 1 redstone dust, and its distinctive feature is that it oxidizes over time, just like other copper blocks, changing its color from copper to a bluish tone as it progresses through oxidation stages.

Copper Lantern
Copper Lantern is a variant of the classic lantern made of copper that emits light at level 15. It works the same way as a regular lantern and can be crafted using 1 copper torch and 8 copper nuggets. It differs from the standard version in that, over time, it oxidizes like other copper blocks, changing its color from copper to a greenish-blue tone.

Fire
Fire emits light at the maximum level of 15 and appears when using flint and steel, a fire charge, or naturally in some structures and biomes, especially in the Nether. In addition to its decorative function, it can deal damage to players and other mobs and can also spread to nearby blocks on its own.

Sea Pickle
Sea Pickle is a natural water block that can be found mainly in warm oceans, most often on coral reefs, where it grows individually or in clusters. It cannot be crafted, and the only way to obtain it is by exploring underwater areas and collecting it, or by farming it using bone meal on coral blocks. It emits light only underwater – one Sea Pickle emits light at level 6, but adding more to the same block can increase the light level up to 15, which is the highest possible value.

Froglight
Froglight, introduced together with frogs and mangrove swamps, stands out for its strong light level of 15 and its unique organic appearance, making it suitable for both modern and natural builds. This block does not generate naturally in the world and cannot be crafted – to obtain it, you need a frog and a small Magma Cube. When a frog eats a small Magma Cube, it drops one Froglight in one of three color variants:
- Ochre Froglight – when the Magma Cube is eaten by a temperate frog
- Verdant Froglight – when the Magma Cube is eaten by a cold frog
- Pearlescent Froglight – when the Magma Cube is eaten by a warm frog

Glowstone
Glowstone is a very distinctive block associated with the Nether, where it most often generates on biome ceilings, forming characteristic clusters that are difficult to reach without proper preparation. Glowstone emits light at level 15 and requires the right approach to mine – if you break it with a tool without the Silk Touch enchantment, it will shatter into Glowstone Dust and will no longer serve its decorative function.

Jack o’Lantern
Jack o’Lantern is a slightly Halloween-themed block that is crafted from a carved pumpkin and a torch and does not generate naturally in the game world. It emits light at level 15, and thanks to its dark and eerie appearance, it fits perfectly into gloomy builds, Halloween decorations, and abandoned villages.

Lantern
Lantern is a classic light-emitting block that shines at level 15 and can be crafted by combining 8 iron nuggets and 1 torch. Thanks to its natural appearance, it fits well into both medieval and modern builds and works perfectly as a light source. It can be hung from blocks or placed on the ground, giving a lot of freedom when designing interiors.

Lava
Lava is a natural block commonly found in caves, deep layers of the Overworld, and the Nether. It cannot be crafted and can only be collected using a bucket. In addition to its lighting function (level 15), it deals damage to players and mobs and ignites most flammable blocks. It is an ideal decoration for dark or industrial builds, though it requires careful handling.

Lava Cauldron
Lava Cauldron serves as a static light source with a light level of 15 and is created when lava is poured into a cauldron. To make it, you must first craft a cauldron and then fill it with lava using a bucket. It is a safer alternative to open lava and can serve a decorative purpose, adding a glow to dark Nether bases or industrial constructions.

Redstone Lamp
Redstone Lamp works only when it receives a redstone signal, such as from a button, lever, or redstone dust. Once powered, it lights up and emits light at level 15. You can craft a Redstone Lamp using 1 glowstone and 4 redstone dust, which are resources that are relatively easy to obtain after a visit to the Nether. It is a great choice if you want to create lighting systems that react to movement.

Respawn Anchor
Respawn Anchor is a special block associated with the Nether, where it serves as a player respawn point. Additionally, it acts as a light source with a light level ranging from 3 to 15, depending on how many charges it has. Sea Lantern
Sea Lantern is mainly associated with the Ocean Monument, where it serves as one of the primary sources of lighting in the structure. Sea Lantern emits light at level 15 and looks especially good underwater. It can be mined using a pickaxe with the Silk Touch enchantment; without it, the block breaks into prismarine crystals, which can be used to craft a Sea Lantern manually using 5 prismarine crystals and 4 prismarine shards.

Shroomlight
Shroomlight appears exclusively in the Nether, specifically in the Crimson Forest and Warped Forest biomes. It most commonly generates inside giant Nether fungi, where it serves as a light source with a light level of 15. It can be mined using any tool, making it a relatively easy block to obtain.

Thanks to their simplicity and functionality, torches are indispensable when exploring caves and mines.

In addition to its industrial use, it can also serve a decorative purpose in your base.

It emits light at level 10, which is significantly lower than a regular torch, but it can be placed both on the ground and on walls. Thanks to its cool color, it perfectly enhances the atmosphere of dungeons, fantasy builds, and dark decorations.

Redstone Ore
Redstone Ore appears in the deeper layers of the world in both its regular form and as Deepslate Redstone Ore. Under normal conditions, this block does not emit light, but when it is hit, it temporarily lights up at level 9. Redstone Ore can be mined with a pickaxe enchanted with Silk Touch – without it, it will drop Redstone Dust instead.

Enchanting Table
Enchanting Table is one of the most important blocks used for enchanting tools, weapons, and armor. By itself, it emits a subtle and atmospheric light at level 7, which fits perfectly into library-themed builds, gently illuminating bookshelves. You can craft it by combining 2 diamonds, 4 obsidian, and 1 book, and thanks to the floating book and magical visual effects, it also serves as an excellent decorative element for your build.

Ender Chest
