Barricades in Project Zomboid are an absolute basic and one of the first steps toward safer survival. They won’t stop the zombie apocalypse or let you sleep peacefully without staying alert, but they can buy you what is most valuable in this game – time. In this guide, we’ll take a look at the available types of barricades and how to build them.
All Types of Window Barricades in Project Zomboid
The first encounter with barricades in Project Zomboid usually looks the same: silence, a moment of calm… and then a sudden bang against the window. That’s when one truth becomes obvious – that window has to go.
Fortunately, the mechanic is very simple. Walk up to the window, right-click it, and choose the “Barricade” option (it won’t appear if you don’t have the required materials). If you’re carrying the proper tools and supplies, your character will get to work immediately, without asking any unnecessary questions.

In Project Zomboid, you can build barricades in three different variants:
Planks Barricade
It is the simplest and most commonly used type of barricade in Project Zomboid, especially in the early game. It’s not perfect, but it’s easy to build and provides a short-term sense of safety.
Required items:
- 1 Wooden Plank
- 2 Nails
- 1 Hammer
Wooden plank barricades work well in the early game and in temporary safehouses. They won’t stop a horde for long, but they effectively slow zombies down, giving you valuable time to evacuate or prepare for a fight.

Metal Bars Barricade
It is one of the most durable barricades in Project Zomboid, but unfortunately it requires more resources and preparation, which is why it usually appears in the later stages of the game.
Required items:
- 3 Steel Rods
- 1 Welding Torch
- 1 Welding Mask
Metal bars work well in permanent bases when you want better control of your surroundings. They do not block the view through the window, allowing you to observe zombies without putting yourself at risk.

Metal Sheet Barricade
It is a strong barricade that usually lasts longer than wooden planks, but it completely blocks the window.
Required items:
- 1 Metal Sheet
- 1 Welding Torch
- 1 Welding Mask
Metal sheets work best if you don’t care about visibility and want maximum delay against zombies.
