Rust Crafting Update: Bees, Chickens and many more!

Rust’s March update, titled Crafting Update, delivers one of the most diverse and content-rich patches in recent months, significantly expanding player interaction with the environment, the crafting system, and base functionality. Among the key additions are the Cooking Workbench, which allows players to prepare entirely new dishes; the Chicken Coop, enabling chicken farming; and a food spoilage system, which forces more thoughtful resource management. The update also introduces beehives, triangle planters, and a new industrial element: the Hopper. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the most important additions to the world of Rust.

Cooking Workbench

One of the most immediately noticeable additions is the Cooking Workbench – a crafting station that allows players to prepare full-fledged meals and baked goods. Each dish provides temporary bonuses that can significantly impact survival or combat. The developers have added a variety of recipes, each requiring specific ingredients such as eggs, honey, meat, or flour. From now on, you’ll be able to bake your own bread and apple pie!

New Cooking Recipes

The update introduced seven different types of pies and a loaf of bread. Below, you’ll find the recipes to create these brand-new dishes!

New Tea Recipes

Along with the March update, two new teas were introduced – Cooling Tea and Warming Tea – which serve as practical additions to the survival system in extreme environments. Warming Tea allows players to stay longer in cold biomes without the risk of freezing, while Cooling Tea lowers body temperature during exploration of hot, desert areas.

Beekeeping, Beehives and Bee Grenades

The Crafting Update introduces a fully developed beekeeping system. Wild beehives now appear in the game world, most commonly found on oak trees. Destroying a hive will cause a swarm of aggressive bees to spawn around you, so proper preparation is essential – to avoid stings, players can use fire or wear a specialized protective suit (Hazmat Suit). The reward for taking the risk is, of course, honey, which can be used to craft delicious new dishes. Additionally, players can create their own beehives – to do so, they must obtain a Beehive Nucleus.

A new addition to the weapon arsenal is the Bee Grenade, which, when thrown, releases a swarm of bees that attack all nearby players. It’s a highly unexpected weapon, relying not on brute force but on environmental pressure and disruption.

Food Spoiling

A significant new mechanic related to food is the spoilage system for meat products. From now on, most meat items have a defined freshness timer, after which they become spoiled and unusable. Raw meat spoils after 6 hours, while cooked meat spoils after 24 hours. The timer begins counting from the moment the item is obtained or cooked. To preserve food for longer periods, players must use refrigerators, which require electricity to operate.

Chicken Cops

Chicken farming is now directly connected to the cooking system. Players can now build their own Chicken Coop, into which they place an egg obtained from a wild chicken. After some time, a chick will hatch, and it must be taken care of properly – the process is not passive and requires active feeding, access to water, and even petting. If all the chicken’s needs are met, it will grow successfully and begin laying eggs regularly, which can be used for cooking or for breeding additional chickens.

Triangle Planters and Flowers

While working on new content, the developers didn’t forget about the plant life in Rust. The farming system has been expanded with the Triangle Planter – a special type of planter designed to fit perfectly on triangular foundations and floors, allowing players to utilize previously hard-to-use space in their bases.

New decorative plants have also been introduced, including roses, orchids, and sunflowers. These flowers are purely cosmetic and have no use in crafting or cooking. They allow players to personalize their bases and create more visually appealing environments.

Additionally, the farming system received a quality-of-life improvement. Players can now hide plant genetic information, which simplifies the user interface and makes it easier to manage larger farms.

Hopper

From now on, it is possible to automatically collect items from the ground and transfer them into designated containers. The Hopper can work in combination with the industrial system and various other setups, making it possible to fully automate loot collection.

Engineering Workbench

The Crafting Update also introduces a new type of workbench – a station specifically designed for crafting components related to electricity, industry, and water systems. This engineering workbench allows players to produce essential parts for building fully automated bases.
